Research conducted in Punjab, as well as internationally, indicate that use of common language as Medium of Instruction (MOI) can boost learning of the students. Preference of English as MOI has no basis in research and it led to establishing rote-learning culture in Public schools of Punjab.
After analyzing compelling supportive evidence, it was decided to replace English as MOI with Urdu at the primary level from this academic year (AY 2020-21).
As the research indicates, use of Urdu as MOI will also help the students in learning other subjects such as Mathematics and Science with better understanding. Considering the importance of English as an international language, English will continue to be taught as a language subject. This balanced approach will help students learn and develop the needed skill-set to prepare themselves for a rapidly evolving knowledge-based economy.
